Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. The holiday season is upon us and that means our thoughts now turn to gift-giving --and, for a lot of us that includes books. With so many choices out there -- walking into a book store this time of year can be a bit overwhelming -- especially if you're buying for someone else's reading taste. So on this program.we thought we'd help you narrow down the list by giving you the "top" book picks for adults and children compiled by those in the know. We've invited back Adele Boeske , Head of Children's Services at the Derry Public Library --and, Jeff Smull, General Manager, of the "Toadstool Bookshop" in Keene to give us their top 10 Picks. Coming up on NH Outlook December 20 - December 24 Monday December 20, 2004 Best Books Host Beth Carroll is joined in-studio by Adele Boeske of Derry, a children's librarian, and Jeff Smull from the Toadstool Bookshop in Keene. They'll have suggestions for gift-giving and reading pleasure. Tuesday December 21, 2004 Weir Tree Farm For many New Hampshire families, decorating the tree is a cherished family tradition. Christmas trees these days are planted and harvested on farms just like other crops. Visit a farm in Colebrook where they’ve been growing Christmas memories since 1945. Dairy Farms New Hampshire's character has long been tied to its agricultural roots. Although dairy farms have dotted the state's landscape for decades, dairy farmers are at a crossroads. Some are meeting the challenge by taking stock of the past. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Taylor takes us to Plainfield where one operation is going back to the future. Milkman Exhibit Many of us remember when milk was delivered fresh, right to our doorstep. The Museum of New Hampshire History is hosting an exhibit entitled "From Dairy to Doorstep: Milk Delivery in New England from 1860 to 1960. We’ll take you on a tour. Wednesday December 22, 2004 Community Needs With the holiday season upon us, many area food banks and charities are seeking donations to serve their growing list of clients. We'll find out where the greatest needs are in the state and show you how to connect to local charitable organizations. Plus, we'll learn more about the Seacoast United Way assessment of its needs, assets and priorities. In-studio guests are Sue Donahue Suter, Executive Director of United Way Seacoast Chapter and Dr. Andrew Smith, Seacoast United Way board member and Director of the UNH Survey Center. Hall of Flags The Hall of Flags commands the main entrance of the State House in Concord. Flags and banners from nearly every war fought by citizens of this state are displayed there. But now age and deterioration threaten the existence of the oldest flags. Richard Ager tells us about a major preservation effort now underway. Thursday December 23, 2004 Family Reunited Hubert and Helene Simwerayi lived through a civil conflict and violence in their native Congo and survived a volcanic eruption that destroyed their home. They eventually managed to escape to the U.S. and ultimately settled in Manchester, but without their seven children. With help from the UNH community and many others, the entire family was finally reunited here this year. We go to the home of the Simwerayi family and see how they are adjusting to life in this country. Friday December 24, 2004 Holiday Music Nothing gets people into the spirit of the holidays like music. We'll hear from the Nashua Chamber Choir and the UNH Notables. We'll also feature music from past NH Outlook guests, including renowned guitarist Ed Gerhard and Rev. Robert Thompson of the Phillips Exeter Academy Church. |
